Puzzle: Generalife, Granada, Spain

Location: The Palacio de Generalife (Arabic: Jannat al-‘Arif’ – Architect’s Garden) was the summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid Emirs of the Emirate of Granada, now beside the city of Granada in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain.

The palace and gardens were built during the reign of Muhammad III (1302–1309) and redecorated shortly after by Abu I-Walid Isma’il (1313–1324).

The complex consists of the Patio de la Acequia (Court of the Water Channel or Water-Garden Courtyard), which has a long pool framed by flowerbeds, fountains, colonnades and pavilions, and the Jardín de la Sultana (Sultana’s Garden or Courtyard of the Cypress). The former is thought to best preserve the style of the medieval garden in Al-Andalus. [Wiki]

Location: Cancún is a coastal city in Mexico’s easternmost state, Quintana Roo, on the Yucatán Peninsula. As a rapidly growing city with a quickly changing skyline, the estimated population for Cancún is 705,000 in 2010 an increase 20% from the census in 2005. Cancún is located on the Yucatan Channel that separates Mexico from the island of Cuba in the Greater Antilles. The Cancún region is sometimes known as the Mexican Caribbean or the Mayan Riviera. Location: The lands where an ancient fortress once stood were known as Colombier until the 17th century. Acquired in the early 16th century by Jean Le Breton, France’s Controller-General for War under King Francis I, a new château was constructed around the original 14th-century keep where King Philip II of France once met Richard I of England to discuss peace.

In 1906, Joachim Carvallo  purchased the property and poured an enormous amount of time, money and devotion into repairing it and creating what many consider to be the most beautiful gardens anywhere. Its famous Renaissance  gardens include a water garden, ornamental flower gardens, and vegetable gardens. The gardens are laid out in formal patterns created with low box hedges. In 1934, Château de Villandry was designated a Monument historique. Like all the other châteaux of the Loire Valley, it is a World Heritage Site. [Wiki]

Location: Iseltwald is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. The village lies on a delta at the south bank of Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland. It is 14 km (9 mi) from Interlaken, the road mostly running along Lake Brienz. It consists of the village of Iseltwald and the hamlets of Furen, Sengg and Isch as well as scattered farm houses through the woods and into the alps.

Iseltwald has a population (as of 31 December 2009) of 410. As of 2007, 6.8% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -9.9%. Location: Ascona is a municipality in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. It has a population of about 5000 and is located on the shore of Lake Maggiore. The “Monte Verità” (literally Hill of Truth) in Ascona has an important historical background. At the beginning of the 20th century, a colony was founded on it which preached the return to nature. Location: Marlow is a town in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 747 at the 2000 census. Marlow is home to Honey Brook State Forest.

Marlow bears many marks of glacial action, and minerals are still found here. A woodworking industry once used the water power of the Ashuelot River to produce tools, furniture and wooden buckets from lumber cut nearby. By 1859, when the population was 708, there were seven sawmills, a gristmill, a carriage shop, a tin shop, and two tanneries. Although the town’s undulating surface is somewhat rocky, farmers produced hay, grain and vegetables. [Wiki]

Location: The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first national parks in the United States.

Nearly two billion years of the Earth’s geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While the specific geologic processes and timing that formed the Grand Canyon are the subject of debate by geologists, recent evidence suggests the Colorado River established its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago. Location: The Edisto River is the longest completely undammed / unleveed blackwater river in North America, flowing 206 meandering miles from its sources in Saluda and Edgefield counties, to its Atlantic Ocean mouth at Edisto Beach, SC. It rises in two main tributaries (North Fork & South Fork) from springs under the Sandhills region of West Central South Carolina, just to the south of the Piedmont fall line. It is the longest and largest river system completely contained by the borders of South Carolina. Its name comes from the Edisto subtribe of the Cusabo Indians. [Wiki]

Story: The lakeside castle of Oberhofen dates back to the Middle Ages, but has been constantly changed and updated throughout the ages. The castle today houses a division of the Historic Museum of Bern, and has a spectacular formal lakeside garden in the English style with many rare specimen trees.

The Wichterheer estate, lakeside to the south of the castle, houses the Museum fũr Uhren und Mechanische Musik (Museum of Timekeeping and Mechanical Music) as well as an exhibit of 20th century local art. [Wiki]

Story: Linderhof Palace (German: Schloss Linderhof) is a palace in Germany, near Oberammergau in southwest Bavaria near Ettal Abbey. It is the smallest of the three palaces built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the only one of which he lived to see completion.

Although Linderhof is much smaller than Versailles, it is evident that the palace of the French Sun-King Louis XIV (who was an idol for Ludwig) was its inspiration.

The park combines formal elements of Baroque style or Italian Renaissance gardens with landscaped sections that are similar to the English garden. [Wiki]

Story:  Diarmuid Donn Mac Duibhne “the master and charmer of women” was a member of the Fianna of Fionn Mac Cumhaill and one of his closest friends. Diarmuid, however, committed the unforgivable sin of eloping with Fionn’s bride-to-be, the beautiful Gráinne. For many years they were on the run from Fionn and the Fianna and wandered through Connacht and Munster.

They eventually made their peace with Fionn through the goodwill of Aongus, but in his heart Fionn never forgave Diarmuid. Fionn lured Diarmuid to the top of Ben Bulben, Co. Sligo and left him alone to face a fierce wild boar. After a long fight Diarmuid managed to kill the beast but was mortally gored himself. Fionn refused him the only thing that could save him, a draught of water from the hands of Fionn, who had the gift of healing. Twice Fionn brought water to Diarmuid and twice let it flow through his fingers, and by the third time he brought water, Diarmuid was dead. [Puzzle box]

Puzzling Zen

Puzzle: Collage Living RoomI have assembled my first puzzle on May 24, 2005 and since then doing puzzles have become a wonderful way to relax for me. I usually couple them with listening to some music or an audiobook. Once a puzzle is completed, I glue it up and affix it to a black background. The favourite landscape, architecture, and fantasy puzzles go up on the walls as decoration, some very simple puzzles are put back in their boxes to serve my descendants, and the rest are stored as pictures.

Puzzle: Collage BedroomIn 2010, hundreds of assembled puzzles later, I have decided to document my collection by taking photos of completed puzzles and recording information on puzzle size, maker, and subject. Some of my puzzles are available on eBay.
